The happiest city in the country is apparently right here in the Bay Area.
Fremont has received the distinction of being the “Happiest City in the United States” in 2021, according to a new survey by WalletHub.
The survey measured emotional and physical wellbeing, income and employment, community, environment and location to rank the nation’s 182 largest cities.
WalletHub examined each city based on 31 key indicators of happiness ranging from the depression rate to average daily leisure time and Fremont came out on the top of the list. It’s another thing for the city’s 250,000 residents and civic leaders to smile about.
Fremont performed well in the categories of emotional & physical wellbeing and community & environment, but received some negative marks for income & employment.
Several other Bay Area cities performed well on the list.
San Jose was not far behind in fifth place. Santa Rosa came in tenth place and San Francisco placed 13th. Oakland came in at number 38.
San Francisco, Oakland and Fremont all tied for first place in lowest rates of depression. San Francisco and Oakland were in the top five cities for income growth. And there must be a lot of happy couples in Fremont, because it also ranked first in the nation for the lowest separation and divorce rate.
The unhappiest city in the country, according to the list, is Detroit, MI.
